Hair and hair substitutes are an integral part of working in the make-up industry, this unit is about developing the knowledge and skills to prepare and provide shampoo, condition and other treatment services for models. Learners will do this by using a variety of techniques, products and service types.

Learners will also develop their understanding and knowledge of possible contra-indications, how to work safely and hygienically, consider model lifestyle, equality and diversity and other factors which can affect the shampooing and conditioning of hair.

Maintaining continuity is imperative in the world of television and film and hair cutting skills are an integral part of working in the make-up industry to ensure visual continuity of the actor’s appearance. This unit is about developing the knowledge and skills to maintain existing styles by mastering the core cutting skills. In addition, these skills will then be applied to cutting hair additions and facial postiche; also an integral part of working within the make-up industry.

Dressing hair is an integral part of working in the make-up industry, this unit is about developing the knowledge and skills to provide a style, dress and finished look for models. Learners will work on a range of different hair lengths and will understand how hair texture, classifications and characteristics will need to be considered in order to achieve a desired finished style. Learners will use a range of products, tools, electrical equipment and techniques to provide the finished styles. Learners will also develop their understanding and knowledge of possible contra-indications, how to work safely and hygienically, consider lifestyle, equality and diversity and other factors which can influence the styling, dressing and finish of hair services.

This unit will enable learners to provide fashion and editorial make-up to clients/models for a variety of occasions. Learners will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare and provide a professional make-up service, learning the importance of following a brief and consulting with others to achieve the desired look. Learners will also have an understanding of health, safety, hygiene, possible contra-indications and the uses of a variety of make-up products.

This unit will enable learners to develop the skills to correctly apply face and body art designs onto models. Learners will cultivate the knowledge and skills to prepare for and provide a professional face and body painting service, demonstrating a variety of designs and techniques. Learners will develop their understanding of how to use and maintain products and equipment effectively, along with their knowledge of possible contra-indications that can occur in face and body painting services.

The aim of this unit is to provide learners with the necessary underpinning knowledge of human anatomy and physiology in the areas under treatment. Learners will develop an understanding of the role of the relevant body systems and associated pathology, enabling the learners to have a sound platform to safely and confidently carry out make-up techniques.

This unit will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills in order to research, design, prepare and create for a total look competition, encompassing make-up and hair skills following a competition design brief. Learners will also have an understanding of health, safety, hygiene, possible contra-indications and the uses of a variety of products.

This unit will enable learners to maintain the continuity of the performer’s appearance. Continuity in the make-up department is specific to keeping the look of the actor in the scene consistent when it is shot over several days/weeks. As the make-up artist, learners will develop their knowledge of how to provide the exact same look every time that the scene is shot regardless of the day, time, location or conditions when the learners are working with that specific actor. Learners will maintain the continuity of the performer’s appearance, ensuring that the performers’ hair and/or make-up match the design and specification at the start of shooting and where appropriate, at the end of the previous sequential take. Learners will keep complete and accurate continuity records.

This unit will enable learners to understand the principles of health and safety at work within a salon, barbershop or spa. It introduces to learners the key legislation and legal and regulatory factors that govern health and safety requirements and emergency procedures, and their importance in the hair and beauty workplace. Learners will develop knowledge of how to recognise hazards and their associated risks, the limits of authority when dealing with the hazards found, and how to follow safe and hygienic working practices. Learners will also need know how to be able to locate firefighting equipment, first aid resources and have an awareness of fire, emergency and evacuation procedures.
