LLQT 1412: Learning and Teaching Theory

This module considers the relationship between key theories of teaching and learning and their relevance and applicability to current research and practice in teaching.  Trainees will apply elements of theory to their own practice and learning context in order to develop and improve learning and create an effective climate for learning.  Teachers will learn a skill-set for effective teaching. Barriers to learning including negative behaviours and how they might be overcome will be considered from the perspectives of the teacher and learner. The relevance of learning and teaching styles will be explored and trainees will be taught methods and mechanisms for effective assessment. The expectations of the roles and responsibilities will be outlined. The module will assess and be responsive to trainee needs and adapt accordingly. 

LLQT 1413: The Teacher as Subject Specialist

The module will introduce trainees to the key skills and principles of teaching, researching and assessing subject specialisms. The module recognises the range of backgrounds teachers in the post-compulsory sector come from and allows the individual subject needs of the trainee to be catered for. Trainees will consider the effectiveness of their own practices. The module will encourage trainees to work collaboratively within their subject or professional discipline.  The nature of inspection and audit will be explained and examined. Emphasis is placed on engaging with new developments including policy reform agendas to ensure teaching approaches, content and resources are kept up-to-date.  Appropriate professional development activities will be identified.  Trainees will collate a portfolio to provide evidence of their professional learning through planning, reflection and evaluation. 

LLQT 1414: The Inclusive Teacher

This module enables teachers to further develop their diagnostic and evaluative approaches to assessing the diverse needs of their learners in order to support them through their learning processes. The specific learning needs of those with Special Education Needs and Disabilities are addressed along with Equality and Diversity issues. Trainees are required to understand and develop teaching and assessment skills that are fair, valid, sufficient and appropriate.  The need to challenge students who have shown great progress and show awareness of current levels is The importance of effective feedback and individual negotiation with learners for target setting as well as other strategies for improving learner success are also emphasised.  The relationship between assessment evaluation, audit and inspection will be explored in terms of quality improvement. Building professional relationships with students will also be examined. Minimum core requirements of the teacher in post-compulsory sector will be explored and analysed.
